Hey there, thanks for being here!

My name is Selena, I’m a Science Secondary PDP student at the University of Victoria. In other words, I am learning to become a teacher, specifically in teaching high school science and mathematics. I have loved science for most of my life, in fact it was my high school Chemistry teacher that made me realize that it was something I was not only interested in, but could do as a career in some way. She helped me connect abstract scientific concepts to real-life phenomena I was curious about, and inspired me to dig deeper and continue asking questions.

I have also been working with youth for the last 5 or so years, and doing so brings me so much joy. I have found that a teacher is not simply an “instructor”, but a mentor, a guide. I have learned many things from my students – not just vice versa with them learning from me! Seeing a teen have an “aha! I get it!” moment really makes all of the challenging moments worth it to me.

You could say, I decided to take this program and (hopefully) eventually gain my BC Teachers Certificate over time by being inspired by science itself, and wanting to expand this love onto the next generation, positive experiences and seeing how passionate teacher role models can shape students lives on a personal level, and being able to experience guiding and mentoring youth in a more informal context.

Aside from teaching science, I have a lifelong passion for music! I learned how to play piano at 5 years old, and since then have expanded into playing guitar and percussion in high school, as well as singing. My free inquiry project, as you will notice, is about song writing; how do I write effectively to convey meaning in a song form, how do I structure the “musical” aspect of a song, and many more questions will be explored!
