Before I embarked on this “formal” songwriting journey, I did “dabble” in some song writing, mostly in high school when I was in band class and many of my close friends had the same love for music as me! My friend Daniel and I would get together to jam weekly, and he loved writing music. I often sang or played an instrument in the songs he wrote, but I never had the full confidence back then to fully finish my own pieces.

I did not realize we had this last post as our final blog post for EdTech, and I had planned the previous blog post to be my final “this is what I did and where I got, and this is where I am going” closure. So I thought, what should I write now, then?!

Well, I remember the older pieces, especially those I played with Daniel, with fond memories, and I wondered if I still had them somewhere on my phone or computer. And luck would have it, he had a copy of an audio file as did I buried deep in our computer drives!!

Listening to these tracks immediately brought back all of those warm memories and feelings of connection we had when we played these songs (no matter how corny the lyrics are) on my couch or in his basement. Our friendship was defined by the mutual love of music we had. I’d often be at his place til 11 or 12 at night probably driving his neighbours insane on the weekends jamming out, and sometimes him and I would also go to a friend’s garage and play music there.

I thought then, what better way to (actually) close the semester off with a reminder as to why I wanted to revisit this song writing journey – the beautiful memories and connection and meaning it has to me, and what a key part of my life it was growing up as a teen.

I will preface this though by saying that these tracks are really not great. We are certainly not professional musicians, but for what it is worth, we loved the process of it.

The first track is a cover of “The Sound” by Switchfoot I recorded in 2019 (I think?) The second one is a little rambly song I wrote during the lockdowns in 2020 but never did anything further with it (it doesn’t even have a title)….The third is one written by Daniel and played by both of us in 2017 (called Stay I think…).
